The year 2019-2020 of the Institut national du sport du Québec (INS Québec) has seen many changes as well as an increase and the diversification of its reach, thereby contributing to the evolution of the organization.

“In all our areas of intervention, in all our services, the Institute experienced an evolution during the year 2019-2020, said Tom Quinn, Chair of the Board of Directors of INS Québec during the annual meeting of the organization. Thanks to our sports medicine experts and our scientific team, the reputation of the Institut has grown. Whether in Quebec, Canada or internationally, we have increased our presence and influence in the sports community, in the public and in the media, as well as organizations in medicine, science, research and innovation. ”

INS Québec and the COVID-19 crisis

The end of the year was marked by the COVID 19 crisis with, back to back, the start of confinement in Quebec (March 13) and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games (March 23).

“It is still too soon to clearly understand, or imagine, all of the impacts, said Gaëtan Robitaille, President and CEO of INS Québec. What is clear is that ‘normality’ will never be the same again. We will come out of this stronger, of this much we can be certain. We can build on the commitment, creativity, judgment and especially the strength of character demonstrated by our team from the very start of the crisis.”

After having noted the depth of the INS Québec team and the collaboration which was strengthened within the network, this crisis will not be wasted as the experience has shown us that INS Québec has what is required to face the changes ahead.

A project to expand the INS Québec Network

INS Québec took the opportunity of the annual meeting to announce the establishment of a working committee to discuss how to expand the INS Quebec Network to serve more and better Québec athletes and especially those of the next generation identified Élite and Relève. This work will be done in close collaboration with partners such as the regional multisport training centres and Québec sports federations.

“There are more than 3,300 high performance and next generation athletes already served by members of the Network, added Tom Quinn. We must do our utmost to provide them with the best possible conditions to help them develop and improve their performance.”

Two renowned personalities on the Board of Directors

The INS Québec board of directors will be able to count on the expertise and reach of two new members who were elected at the annual meeting: Nathalie Joncas, actuary and executive advisor of the CSN, and Yann Paquet, Vice-President, Strategy and International Affairs at Québecor.

In addition to her role at CSN, Nathalie Joncas is also Vice-President of the Board of the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan, member of the Working Party on Private Pensions of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and member of the Board of Directors of Retraite Québec. She has over 30 years of experience as an actuarial consultant. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries and holds the designation of Administratrice de sociétés certifiée (ASC).

At Québecor, Yann Paquet oversees the acquisition of foreign programs, the development of cinema in Quebec, international distribution and the financing of programs for all Groupe TVA channels and Vidéotron platforms. Working for more than 20 years in the media sector, he worked for Radio-Canada for almost ten years. After starting out as a sports journalist, he was one of the architects of the public broadcaster’s digital division.

For their part, Ms. Francine Champoux, Mr. Jean R. Dupré, Mr. Bernard Petiot and Ms. Marie Pinsonneault were re-elected as a member of the board of directors for a new term. The Institute also underlined the contribution of Ms. Lynn Blouin, who has not requested a reappointment and who is leaving the board of directors after four years of engagement.
