Statement on the Future of Sport in Canada
Commission Preliminary Report
The Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN) applauds the Future of Sport in Canada Commission for their preliminary report and recommendations. The report focuses on building a robust sport system that is safe, inclusive, and athlete-centred, a system which COPSIN fully supports. As the trusted team behind Canada’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes, COPSIN strongly believes that every participant deserves to train, compete, and excel in environments free from abuse, maltreatment, and barriers to access.
For COPSIN, the report highlights many of the priorities that the sport institutes and centres experience every day in their work with high performance athletes, coaches, and practitioners – from the daily training environments to competing on the world stage. COPSIN is particularly encouraged by the recommendation for the Government of Canada to strengthen and regularly review core funding in the sport system, including the National Sport Organizations and Canadian Sport Institutes and Centres. Stable and adequate investment is essential to ensuring organizations can meet both their operational responsibilities and plan for long-term growth and sustainability that will benefit athletes across the country. The references to the importance for the sport system to care for the physical and mental health of athletes is a commitment that COPSIN firmly believes.
As the Commission continues its work, COPSIN will remain an active partner in shaping a sport system that reflects the values that Canadians expect: safety, inclusivity, and excellence. COPSIN looks forward to engaging and collaborating with its colleagues across the sport system to ensure athletes of all abilities have the support they need to succeed, and it eagerly awaits the final report, due in early 2026.
